Defining PSIM – the hottest niche in the security industry

Most organizations are not familiar with the concept of PSIM and instead turn to integrators and manufacturers of alarm monitoring equipment, access control systems, and video management systems for PSIM-type solutions. However, I think PSIM represents a new class of software-based systems.  Here's how I define physical security information management (PSIM).

PSIM – Software designed to aggregate, normalize, correlate, apply policy to and display diverse data as information to simplify and improve security incident response.

    I don’t think we need to invent yet another acronym. I have been monitoring physical data for years with a traditional SIM. And currently at Splunk, we do the same. No need for PSIM. Stop the acronym war.

    “Raffy” the last commentator is off track. I did a little “CSI” research on this guy and he is not even in our industry really….strange how he comments and says no more acronyms when the industry he is in is the MASTER at acronyms! PSIM is the right message and I think SecurityDreamer has it perfect as do most of the company’s in the PSIM space!

    Don’t be too hard on Raffy. He is just a bit stuck in his IT world. He hasn’t realized that the physical security industry is five times the size of his IT security industry. He is right about one thing. We don’t need more acronyms for the sake of acronyms. But we do need to have a fresh discussion about the use of technology to solve traditional security challenges. That’s PSIM.

    I’m not going to bother trying to restate the case against the PSIM marketplace, since I think Honovich’s post is spot on.

    There is an opportunity for the current PSIM provider, but it requires a significant change in their business model.
    Cut out the channel! (…let the flaming from outdated hack integrator commence…)
    The integrator channel is unnecessary for 3 reasons:
    1. PSIM customers are, by defintion, larger deployments. You don’t have quite the truck roll problem you do selling into banking or retail so the need for “feet on the street” is less.
    2. The integrator channel is not capable of providing the required strategy, design, and system integration services required. Also, they can’t even do the sales piece right without the PSIM SE so you aren’t really solving a scalability problem.
    3. And so the PSIM provider is going to get stuck doing all that stuff anyway, incurring the costs as sales, marketing, and engineering expense, and giving away 40-50 points to the thumb-twiddling integrator.
    It is a shitty shitty model. Call it Ortega 2.0.
    What would I do? Go sell direct. Charge money for strategy, design, custom integration and instead think of it as “class b” reusable software and UI components.
    If you really have stones, complete the loop by offering your own outsourced monitoring services. If you really believe the PSIM value proposition, then you can get creative in the pricing models to make it appealing to customers and lucrative for yourself.
    Offer a turnkey solution, guarantee results, and get paid for the whole enchilada. Of course, people (investors) will say “if you do this you can’t scale to be the next big big thing.”
    They are right.
    But they are wrong in thinking the PSIM model as designed CAN scale or be profitable. As Honovich says, it is a niche market. As I pointed out, you get stuck with all the expense and hassle. At least in my model you make money as a mid-tier business.

    Splunk…hahahahahaha. This reminds me of the sounds of a bathroom visit…And after looking at their overwrought geekish interface I can see why geeks love it. It’s so freaking complex that management could never figure out how they’re getting hosed. Splunk is the sound of subterfuge brought about by IT departments using expensive, complex diagnostic tools that only they can decipher.

    SecurityBear & Schratboy miss the point…PSIM will in future be the domain of even the smallest deloyment – but it won’t be the current PSIM vendors who’ll be making the money.

    When I read some of the posts on SecurityDreamer, I think that I must be living in another world.
    Most of my client’s are still trying to get a recorded CCTV image that is of good enough quality so that they can actually identify someone; or struggling with basic issues such the ability to use a single access card across multiple buildings that have different access control systems. Most security equipment manufacturer’s still haven’t got the basics right, even after more than 20 years of trying.
    Intead of focusing on things like PSIM and advanced video analytics that target only a tiny percentage of the market, how about if we develop some basic security systems that meet real end-user needs and don’t require an IT professional to operate?

    My post wasn’t saying nobody will make money, just that PSIM companies don’t make sense as a pure play software business (and that it doesn’t make sense to use the channel.)

    Wow .. from such humble beginnings PSIM is real … a concept is truly accpeted when there is healthy debate and passion behind the various views.

    Ortega was one of the pioneer in the PSIM market. That company is no longer exist but its IP has been acquired by another company called Genius Vision Digital: http://www.gvdigital.com
    and GVD makes that Ortega piece of software as their C-Series Gateway product line. So besides Orsus and Proximex you still have this choice. The famous web browser based client GUI is still unlimited and free of charge.
